The diversity of the natural habitats and village architecture in the Vexin Français, an area comprising 99 communes in the Val d'Oise and the Yvelines, gives it a character that is unexpected in the Ile-de-France. That part of the Park lying within the Yvelines provides, around Meulan and Mantes-la-Jolie, splendid opportunities for walks and days out in the valley of the Montcient, not far from the slopes leading down to the Seine which were the inspiration of many of the Impressionists by virtue of the beauty of the landscapes and the variations in the natural light. It is for that reason that the Vexin Français offers over 800 km of walking and riding trails along which visitors can spot an exceptionally rich assortment of flora and fauna.
Indeed, more than 470 plant varieties have been counted, 14 of them now protected species! In addition, the Vexin Français is ideal for recreation, with numerous opportunities for sporting activities near Paris (golfing, horse riding, gliding, canoeing and more), cultural visits (museums, listed monuments…) and discovery walks and leisure pursuits (farmhouse accommodation, farm produce, theme trails…).
The Port de l'Ilon at Saint-Martin-la-Garenne is a fine example of such possibilities in the sphere of leisure cruising in the Yvelines.
