Arriving through the 3500 hectares of lovely forest one can easily understand why the French kings succumbed to the charms of Saint-Germain-en-Laye. Today, families and young lovers stroll or cycle in a leisurely manner through the gardens of the estate and on the divine “Terrace”, 2.5 km long and designed by Le Nôtre.
Louis VI (Louis the Fat) fell in love with Saint-Germain and then other kings made it their favourite residence too. Louis XIV was born there and lived there until he moved to Versailles. The town retains numerous royal memories, such as the “old chateau”, its Renaissance courtyard, a legacy of the time of François I, and the chapel built in 1238 in the reign of king Saint Louis and prefiguring the Sainte-Chapelle in Paris. Today it is home to the National Archaeological Museum, one of the world’s greatest collections of prehistoric art with its famous Lady of Brassempouy.
Other sights: the Maurice Denis departmental museum, the Claude Debussy museum.
Top tip: the 800 shops adorning the town centre are a source of delight for shopping fans. Between the market place with its arcades and the pedestrianised streets, visitors can always find what they’re looking for: fashion for all, top labels, furniture, designer-ware, and of course wonderful cakes and pastries!
