Rambouillet, a royal town

As you arrive from Paris, Rambouillet appears as a charming bustling oasis with the gentle ambience of a destination for visitors and leisure. You will immediately succumb to the charm of its XVIIIth century mansions, its fine large houses and its villas built in the inter-war years.

It was Louis XVI who made this lovely former postal relay station a place for pleasure and entertainment. He acquired the chateau in 1783 to indulge one of his passions: the hunt. He had two follies erected in the grounds, the Queen’s Dairy for Marie Antoinette, with its bas-reliefs by Pierre Julien, and the Shell Cottage.  The former royal estate is now a Presidential preserve also known for its famous “hunts”. The Palace of the King of Rome was built by Louis XVI from 1784 onwards as a governmental property and converted by Napoleon I in 1812 for use by his son, the king of Rome.

Other sights: the small shops, in particular those selling local country fare such as the new delicious Faizann terrine, the Espace Rambouillet and the bellowing of stags, the Musée du jeu de l’oie (toy and games museum) and the Rambolitrain railways museum.

Top tip: the Bergerie Nationale, formerly Louis XVI’s experimental farm devoted to the rearing of merino sheep and now open to the public with sheep pens, stables, farmyard, gift shop selling local country produce and a host of events and entertainment for visitors.
