The Château de Dampierre in the Chevreuse valley was built at the end of the XVIIth century to plans drawn up by Hardouin-Mansart and Le Nôtre, who designed the gardens and grounds. The combination of these two designing geniuses made the grounds of the château one of the most famous gardens near Paris, a masterpiece of architectural design. Today, the lawns enhance the nobility and charm of the setting, in which water plays a major role. At the far end of the great expanse of water, the flower garden has given way to a romantic garden laid out by the present-day Duchesse de Luynes, whose rich family history is revealed on a tour of the château itself.
