Marly can be visited with friends or as a family, first of all the main street with oits colourful shops and then the Marly Estate. And that is simply staggering! You will be totally captivated by the grounds with their ornamental ponds, the vast expanse of lawn, the sculptures and the lovely avenues laid out by Jules-Hardouin Mansart.
In witness… It was Louis XIV who decided to build another residence in the Marly forest and organise festivities there, the Marlys. “The king wanted to have a residence to which he could escape and besides there were woodlands at Marly and Louis XIV was a great huntsman… Marly was a residence for private entertainment, there were balls, festivities, they played cards and billiards, there were concerts too.” Anne-Sophie Moreau of the Musée Promenade speaking to Stéphanie Labadie for France Bleu 107.1
In the XIXth century, artists such as Sisley, Alexandre Dumas fils and Maillol came here to seek tranquillity and inspiration.
Other sights: the old village and its narrow streets, the Musée promenade at Louveciennes, and at Port-Marly the house of Alexandre Dumas, the “Château de Monte Cristo” and the Impressionists’ trail along the banks of the Seine.
Top tip: the many restaurants in the Grande rue, among them Le Village (Michelin star) and its Japanese chef Tomohiro Uido, and Le Cottage for its famous brunch.
