The gardens were laid out in the XVIth century to enhance the architectural proportions of the château, then belonging to the alchemist Raoul Moreau.
150 years later, the terraces and the central avenue were to serve as the basis for a refurbishment in what was then know as the Frenche style.
Claude Desgot, a newphew and associate of Le Nôtre, took inspiration from that style in laying out new gardens and perspectives, thus continuing the architect's work.
In the 19th century, Thoiry's parkland succumbed to the fashion for landscape gardens and only the main south-west axis and its French-style formal parterre escaped demolition. 
Landscape designers created splendid clumps of trees like sequoias.
Around 1970, in the interests of returning to the gardens' history their full and complete dimensions, the proprietors of the château restored the central axis of the French-style formal garden. 
They also cleared the view of the château to recreate the original perspective whilst the same time developing on the rest of the estate the landscaping of the grounds and the botanical collections.
The château and botanical gardens at Thoiry are part of a full-day visit which includes extensive zoological gardens and a drive-through safari.
